Hosting cost guides usually don't go past the monthly server price. That is maybe only 60% of the true cost of hosting a GTA 6 server. Here is the full breakdown as of April 2026, using actual pricing from the hosts we monitor.

Base hosting costs by server size

32 slots (starter community)

• Budget shared: $10 to $18 per month.
• Quality shared: $20 to $28 per month.
• Small VPS: $25 to $40 per month.

64 slots (growing community)

• Quality shared: $35 to $50 per month.
• Mid VPS: $55 to $75 per month.
• Entry dedicated: $90 to $130 per month.

128 slots (established community)

• Large VPS: $110 to $160 per month.
• Performance dedicated: $180 to $280 per month.

256 slots (top-tier city)

• Top dedicated: $350 to $550 per month.
• Multi-node cluster: $600 to $1000 per month.

Costs most guides forget

Database and additional services

A proper MariaDB instance for 64+ slots deserves its own server, or at least its own container. Add another $20 to $40/month. Dedicated backup server: $10 to $20/month. Staging environment (you need one of those for any serious setup): about half of your production costs.

Running everything on the same box works fine for small servers, but it's a bad idea for anything over 64 slots.

Domain, DNS, and email

• Domain: $10 to $15 per year.
• Premium DNS with SRV records: free to $5 monthly.
• Email forwarding with your domain: free to $6 monthly.

DDoS protection

Some hosts include it, others charge extra. If a targeted attack hits a busy RP server, the cost of unprotected downtime far outweighs the monthly premium for mitigation. If proper mitigation is not included, expect to budget $10-$30 per month more.

Moderation tooling

• Discord bot that's managed for you: $5-$25/mo.
• Panel integrations (Pterodactyl plugins, monitoring agents): $0-$15/mo.
• Status page (Statuspage.io or open-source self-hosted version): free to $29/mo.

Staff time

Staff time is typically the largest unseen expense when running volunteer-staffed servers. Just because it's unpaid doesn't mean it doesn't come with an opportunity cost. A 64-slot server will generally require 15-25 hours a week of collective admin time. If you value that time at even minimum wage, your "actual" costs greatly exceed your hosting costs.

Annual vs monthly billing

Annual plans typically offer 10% to 20% off. Before you commit, ask:

• Can you upgrade or downgrade your tier mid-contract without cancellation fees?
• What's the refund policy if the server doesn't perform well?
• Is the price locked for the year, or can the host increase it mid-contract?

Annual commitments are riskier before GTA 6 launches in November 2026, since the game's actual requirements aren't fully known yet. Monthly or 3-month plans are typically the safer choice through Q4 2026.
